What is the standard size of a container?

Is there a standard container size?

In the early stage of container transportation, the structure and size of containers were different, which affected the international circulation of containers. For exchangeability, relevant international standards and national standards for containers have been formulated. Generally, the standards for containers are divided into three parts:

1. Outer dimensions of the container

The outer length, width and size of the container are the main parameters to determine whether the container can be replaced between ships, chassis vehicles, freight cars and railway vehicles.

2. The size of the container

The length, width and size of the interior of the container, the height is the distance from the bottom surface of the box to the bottom of the top plate of the box, the width is the distance between the two inner lining plates, and the length is the distance between the inner plate of the door and the inner lining plate of the end wall. Determine the volume of the container and the large size of the cargo in the box.

3. Inner volume of container

The loading volume is calculated according to the inner size of the container. The inner volume of the container of the same size may be slightly different due to the difference in structure and manufacturing materials.

What is the standard size of the container?

According to different transported goods, containers have different size specifications. Generally, the standard container size specifications mainly include the following:
1. 20-foot container: the outer dimensions are 20*8*8 feet 6 inches, the inner diameter: 5898*2352*2390mm, and the load is 17.5 tons.
2. 40-foot container: the outer dimension is 40*8*8 feet 6 inches, the inner diameter: 12024*2352*2390mm, the load is 28 tons.
3. 40-foot high cabinet: the outer dimensions are 40*8*9 feet 6 inches, the inner diameter: 12032*2352*2698mm, and the load is 28 tons.
The above is the standard size of the container, some countries and regions will also have related standards, and some have 45 feet high container, the specific size can check the relevant standard information in the region.

How to see the container feet?

To know the size of the container, you can generally look at the information behind the container door. The right door is from top to bottom. The first line of information is the container number, and the second line of information is the size of the container:
The first character on the left indicates the box length (2 is 20 feet, 4 is 40 feet, L is 45 feet), and the second character indicates the box height and width (2 means the box height is 8 feet 6 inches, 5 means the box height is 9 feet 6 inches, the width is 8 feet 6 inches), three or four indicate the type of container (such as G1 shows a common container with an open door at one end).

Where there are containers, there will be container handling machinery. If you have to purchase container handling equipment (such as: reach stacker, side stacker, container stacker, container straddle carrier, etc.) or related spare parts products, you can contact us. We can provide related products or even customized products.
