Many trucks have had bearings burn, and there are even cases where bearings have turned into slag. People can’t help but wonder why such a solid structure would encounter such a problem? Putting aside factors such as long mileage and natural aging of bearings, whether the bearing is easy to damage is actually closely related to the driver’s driving habits and maintenance skills.
Bearing burns, in fact, the bearing cannot rotate or rotates with difficulty. Generally, during driving, the bearing will fully “fit” with the butter and grease between the wheel end and the brake drum, and help the vehicle tire to rotate under lubrication, so the first problem lies in the use of butter.
According to relevant technical experts, if inferior butter is used on the wheel hub and the wheel end, it cannot fully lubricate the bearing. Then, under long-distance and long-term driving conditions, the inner and outer bearings will increase the friction between the metals, resulting in kinetic energy converted into heat, and the temperature of the bearing will rise abnormally, eventually causing the bearing to burn due to high temperature.
Therefore, we must pay attention when using the car. For example, if we use oil-lubricated wheel ends, we must choose the corresponding products for replacement when replacing. The same is true for the axle grease lubrication between the wheel end and the brake drum. Don’t go to some street shops or repair tricycles for replacement in pursuit of low cost or convenience. Otherwise, the bearings will burn or the axle may be damaged as a whole.
Second, some friends said that they replaced genuine butter, but such problems still occurred. Then it may be caused by inadequate adjustment. What is inadequate adjustment? It is caused by the wheel end screw assembly being too loose or too tight after applying butter. If the thread is too tight, it will also cause the truck wheel end to generate high temperature during operation, and eventually cause butter or grease to evaporate.
How to judge whether the thread is adjusted too tight? In fact, it is also very simple. After we replace the butter or grease, we should test it on the road. After a period of time, we use a temperature gun or mobile phone temperature measurement software to see if there is any abnormal temperature between the wheel hub and the brake drum of each wheel. If the vehicle has a single wheel end or wheel hub with ultra-high temperature, it is very likely that the adjustment is too tight and should be adjusted in time.
At the same time, we should also pay attention to the fact that when applying butter to the wheel hub bearing, don’t be greedy for fear that the bearing is not lubricated properly and ask the greaser to apply more butter. In fact, this is wrong. The amount of butter should be appropriate. Too much or too little is not good. Because the ABS sensors of some models are mostly installed near the bearings in the wheel hub, once there is too much butter, the sensor will be blocked, which may cause the ABS sensor probe installed nearby to be unable to sense, leading to greater errors.
Of course, after the wheel end bearing is burned, it is necessary to replace the parts. At this time, don’t make the mistake of replacing the so-called high-strength, low-priced bearings in some roadside shops. These bearings cannot be compared with the original ones in terms of manufacturing process or raw materials. Most of them are even inferior and refurbished products. The quality cannot be guaranteed. Installing such bearings on the car is undoubtedly a time bomb. At that time, if it causes breakage and wheel locking, the consequences will be disastrous.
